War

Here's a change of pace. I was attempting to capture the chaos of combat portrayed in movies like "Blackhawk Down" and "Saving Private Ryan". I drew it at a low angle, and put ink splashes to represent dirt as bullets hit the ground. The problem with trying to represent war is that there is always the possibility that you romanticize it instead of portraying it truthfully. War movies of the past dance a fine line between propaganda and art. Sometimes I think it's best to avoid the topic entirely to not appear insensitive or uneducated about the truth of war. Artists openly express their opinions about politics, religion, society, nature and life in general. Everybody has their opinions that they discuss with their family and friends, but artist express these ideas to millions of people, sometimes with a harsh backlash. I really respect these artists. I'm trying to decide if I'm that brave. Maybe I'll just draw pretty things and everyone will be happy.
